What Is Search Engine Optimization

Don’t hide on the internet.  You have gone to all the hard work of producing your blog or website content and no one can find you.  Well before you can be found online, Google and the other search engines have to find you.  The way they find you and your content is called search engine optimization.

What is search engine optimization you ask?  It is an algorithm or formula that Google uses to rate websites and their content.  The higher you rank, the better chance someone searching for the information you provide will find your page.

This is of critical when you are trying make money online.  If people cannot find you, they cannot buy or use what you are offering.  So the way you improve your position is to adapt your content to use keywords that people are searching for.

, I first went to Google Adwords to find out what phrases searchers were using to get information on the SEO (Search Engine Optimization).  Google Adwords has a keyword planner which will give you suggestions on what phrases are being searched.

I use the term phrases because it is easier to rank for a phrase of two words or more than it is for a single word.  For instance the word “internet” gets of 200,000 searches per month.  The planner also rates you competition for that term and as you might guess it “High”.  Just as an exercise, go to your search box and type in the word internet.  At the top of the page you will see a number, I bet it is over one billion.  Now how do expect to compete with over one billion bits of content that got there before you did?

If you now go to the planner and search the phrase “internet marketing” the monthly searches drop all the way to 12,000, but the competition is still very high.  The Google search on your browser drops to a mere 130 million results.  So you see, you have to get more creative in your search phrases.  If you were to use Pay Per Click advertising it would cost you a fortune.

The ideal results for the planner would be a phrase of three words or longer (these are called Long Tail Keywords) that has between 500 and 5,000 monthly searches and also has low competition.  Chose a phrase that will work for your project.  Incorporate it into the title of your content and once every 100 words or so.  It does not matter if it is a blog post, a title of a page on your site, or terms in the description of a product you may be selling.

So your homework is to get familiar with the Google Adwords Planner and find phrases that are pertinent to your project or content and use them to rank higher in the search engines.  Even though its seems like you would want 200,000 searches, the fact is they are random.  A very low percentage would actually be looking for you content.  Much better to have smaller number that are looking for exactly what you are offering.  This is called “Targeted Traffic”.
