SEO is the acronym for Search Engine Optimization which is the procedure that web sites and web pages follow in order to maximize their exposure and make themselves as prominent as possible in search results pages of search engines. Search Engine Optimization Ranking is the grading of web sites on many aspects and levels that would influence where the web site or web page link would appear in the list of hits (search results) on the search results page. Relevancy of the web site to the search being conducted is the primary factor influencing this ranking. In determining the relevancy of a web site, a search algorithm is used by search engines. A search algorithm is any algorithm used to find the results to searches from a pool of possible solutions and picking the ones that best suite the criteria specified. There are different rules followed by a search engine’s algorithm in performing this action; these are the bases for SEO Ranking.

 

The first SEO Ranking criterion is concerned with the use of keywords in the website. This would include the use of keywords in URL (Uniform Resource Locator), domain name, title, body and internal links of the web sites. Frequency of the keywords is also a contributing factor in this SEO Ranking criterion. The placement and frequency of keywords will help the search engine to gauge the relevance of the web site to the search. Keyword font size, keyword proximity, keyword phrase order and keyword prominence (how early in page/tag) are all considered under this in addition to the aforementioned.

 

Off-Page factors are also taken into consideration under SEO Ranking besides the above stated On-Page factors. On-Page factors can be manipulated to show a false impression of relevancy to a search. For example, a web site could include a keyword many, many times just for the sake of gaining a high SEO Ranking but in reality, it has little to do with the actual search. Due to this shortcoming of On-Page factors, analysis of Off-Page factors of web sites is included in SEO Ranking rules. One main Off-Page SEO Ranking factor is link analysis; through this, pages are analyzed and how web sites are connected to each other are considered. This helps determine the importance of the particular web page.  Off-Page SEO Ranking factors also include page rank, total incoming links, incoming links from high-ranking pages, popularity of referring page, HTML title of referrer page, etc.
